I learnt an important lesson drawing this portrait. Freddie’s mother had given me a photograph that she loved of her son. This was my second commissioned portrait so although I preferred to take my own photographs, I complied and drew from her photograph. I wasn’t too happy with the result but gave her the portrait. Luckily she was honest and admitted she didn’t like the portrait either. I was relieved to have the opportunity to take my own photographs and to trust my own judgement. The photographs are key to making a good portrait.
