I was honored to have been invited to partake in the Artist’s in Action Day at the Cultural Centre in Moose Jaw last year (2014). I was showing my technique whilst painting this painting live, when an older man came up to me and told me I should only paint the Grain Elevator and forget the Silos’s.
Being new to the Prairies, this gave me a valuable insight into the attitudes towards the modernisation of farming techniques in the area. As the Grain Elevators are left to crumble while stronger, modern silo’s are taking their place, there is a strong desire to preserve what may soon be lost.
As so often with my work, I have an idea, but it is only during the process and finality of the work that it’s true meaning becomes clear. This painting became significant for me in exposing the Past within the Present.
